Google Offers Free AI Training to All 6 Million US Educators — Launches May 13
Starting tomorrow, every K-12 and higher education teacher in the United States will have access to a completely free, structured AI literacy programme. Google, in partnership with ISTE+ASCD, is launching the Google AI Educator Series — monthly training modules covering practical AI skills for classroom use, available to all 6 million eligible US educators. No cost. No catch.
Alongside the training, Google is rolling out a stack of new tools: expanded NotebookLM limits for Education Plus users (double the notebooks, sources, and outputs), Gemini integration directly into Moodle LMS, NEET exam prep for students in India, and Google Takeout support so graduating students can keep their Photos when they leave institutional accounts. For university research teams, Google is launching the Public Sector Program for Accelerated Research (GPAR), starting with Purdue University, the University of Alabama, and UC Riverside.
This isn't a slow rollout or a beta test. It's a full nationwide programme launched against the backdrop of a teacher workforce that is burnt out, under-trained on AI, and rapidly losing ground to students who've been using it for months.
Over half of teachers are currently using AI tools with zero formal training. This is the first large-scale, free, federally-accessible programme designed to fix that — and it lands at exactly the moment schools are starting to mandate AI literacy as a graduation requirement.
