1. OpenAI launches three role-specific education plugins for K-12 teachers, college faculty and students

OpenAI has rolled out three purpose-built plugins — K-12 Educator, College Educator and College Student — inside ChatGPT Work and Codex, available through ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments. Instead of requiring users to build complex prompts, each plugin bundles apps, role-specific skills and common workflows: lesson translation and exit tickets for teachers, syllabus updates and interactive assessments for faculty, and guided tutoring, flashcards and study guides for students.
OpenAI says institutions keep control over which tools and data connect, and that teachers remain responsible for grading and pedagogical decisions. Early deployments named in the announcement include Houston ISD, Fairfax County and Fulton County schools, plus Wharton, UT Austin and the Cal State system in higher ed.
OpenAI also says over 200 million people aged 18-24 use ChatGPT weekly, but even advanced student users tap roughly 90-99% less of its capability than "power users."
2. EU AI Act transparency rules take effect for chatbots, deepfakes and AI content

Article 50 of the EU AI Act now requires AI chatbots, tutoring agents and content-generation tools to clearly disclose their artificial nature — including in child-friendly, age-appropriate language when the audience includes children. Providers and deployers face separate obligations: interactive systems must identify themselves by the first interaction, AI-generated content needs machine-readable marking, and deepfakes require a visible, human-readable label.
The rules apply to any provider whose AI systems are used in the EU, even if the company is based elsewhere, and carry fines up to €15 million or 3% of global turnover. A vaguely-worded disclaimer buried in terms and conditions does not count as compliance — the European Commission's guidance says the disclosure must be obvious "no later than the first interaction."
Students using AI to write their own homework are treated as acting in a personal capacity and are excluded from the disclosure rules — but the tool's provider still has to comply.
3. Harvard begins lab study of AI-enabled toys and child development

Researchers at Harvard Graduate School of Education have built their own AI-powered toy and started testing it with children in the lab, the first phase of a study that will move into children's homes. The team — led by Assistant Professor Ying Xu — plans to compare children's play with the AI toy against traditional, non-AI toys, tracking play behaviour, language use, social interaction, trust and attachment over time.
The study follows a 21-page conceptual paper from the same researchers asking who is really directing play when a toy can talk, remember and introduce its own ideas. Earlier research cited in that paper found that AI-enabled dolls can narrow the range of stories children invent, while also potentially expanding vocabulary through extra conversation.
One cited study found four-year-olds attributed a talking chatbot's "agency" as comparable to that of a living person.
4. University of Greater Manchester embeds student-designed AI literacy framework in training

Published in Compass: Journal of Learning and Teaching, a new case study details how the University of Greater Manchester treated students as co-researchers when building its AI guidance. After surveying 101 students and recruiting two postgraduates to help analyse the data, staff built a four-stage framework — Prepare, Understand, Apply, Responsible Use — now embedded in pre-enrollment and academic-skills programmes.
By May 2026, 492 students had completed the self-paced tutorial, which awards a digital AI literacy badge. An evaluation of 50 students found increased confidence in using AI responsibly and a clearer understanding of what counts as acceptable use — though the researchers note the study is limited to two disciplines and call for wider testing.
The focus groups targeted Business Management and Nursing and Midwifery students — the two disciplines with the highest AI-related misconduct referrals at the university.
5. England's early-career teachers are outpacing veterans on classroom AI use

New Teacher Tapp data collected across the 2025-26 school year shows 68% of early-career teachers (ECTs) used AI for lesson planning last month, compared with 54% of experienced classroom teachers. The gap widened further for other tasks: ECTs were twice as likely to use AI for professional development and three times as likely to use it for timetables and seating plans.
The same dataset found ECT wellbeing stayed consistently higher than that of experienced teachers throughout the year, and that classroom behaviour disruption — while still a major stressor — became less of a wellbeing hit for ECTs by June than it was in the autumn term.
41% of ECTs said building relationships with students and families was the best part of their year — up from the 27% who expected to feel that way back in September.
6. Coursera invests $100M in Andrew Ng's new AI-agent learning company, LearnVector

Coursera is making a $100 million strategic investment in LearnVector, a new AI-native learning company founded by Coursera co-founder Andrew Ng. Rather than the "one-to-many" model of online courses, LearnVector plans to build AI agents that adapt to each learner individually, coach them through practice, and stay involved until they've actually mastered the material.
Coursera CEO Greg Hart framed the deal as an extension of the platform's existing AI strategy, which already spans Coursera's Course Builder and Udemy's AI Assistant following their May 2026 merger. Hart said the goal isn't just serving existing users better, but growing the overall market for learning by making it "more personal and more relevant to people's lives."
Coursera says it will explore combining LearnVector's technology with content and insights from its network of more than 300 million learners.
