Term starts in a fortnight and the AI-in-education story has stopped being about novelty. This week it was about money, evidence and the widening gap between how much students already use AI and how little anyone has taught them to use it well. Here are the seven stories worth your attention.
1. AWS puts more than $500m behind student cloud and AI training

Amazon Web Services has launched Student Rewards on AWS Builder Center, describing it as a commitment of more than $500 million in resources for university students worldwide. Any verified student aged 18 or over who completes a Builder Center profile immediately unlocks twelve months of premium Skill Builder access — more than 900 courses, hands-on labs, certification prep and game-based learning — which AWS values at $449.
Beyond that, rewards unlock by activity rather than by application. Seven badges earns $10 in AWS credits, fourteen earns $20, and twenty-one earns a Foundational Certification exam voucher worth $100. Total potential value per student is $579. AWS also runs Student Builder Groups, student-led campus communities now operating in more than 60 countries.
The talent war has moved upstream, and the recruiting ground is now the second year of a degree.
2. US Education Department: judge EdTech by outcomes, not screen time

New federal guidance asks states and districts to stop treating screen time as the main test of whether technology belongs in a classroom, and to judge instructional technology on whether it actually improves learning. Districts are urged to build effectiveness data into procurement and renewal, to look specifically for products backed by randomised controlled trials, and to drop tools that repeatedly fail to deliver.
Assistant Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education Kirsten Baesler draws a sharp line between recreational and instructional technology: “Cell phones and algorithm-driven social media distract students from learning… In contrast, instructional technologies should be judged by their impact on learning, not simply whether they happen on a screen.” The letter is blunt about vendors too — “Responsible design is the floor” — and asks companies to publish independent evaluations and be transparent about limitations, not just capabilities. Louisiana, Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan and Texas are named as states testing outcome-based contracting.
The demo is no longer the evidence. That change alone could reshape the sector.
3. AI tutor slowed maths practice but improved recovery after mistakes — 6,997-student trial

A randomised trial of 6,997 middle schoolers in Hamilton County Schools, Tennessee, across 20 schools and just under 100 teachers, tested what a guard-railed AI tutor adds to an existing digital learning platform. Every student got instructional videos, practice, feedback and worked solutions; half also got access to NUMI’s AI tutor, which was deliberately designed never to hand over the final answer.
The clearest effect showed up straight after mistakes. Among students inside a mastery workflow who got a question wrong, AI access raised the chance the next attempt was correct by 8.5 percentage points and cut the extra attempts needed by 0.96. It did not make them faster — time to the next correct answer rose by 2.88 minutes, and AI students covered less material in a fixed 50-minute lesson. A week later the learning gain was modest and only marginally significant: 40.2% of AI students answered the delayed practised question correctly versus 37.0% of the platform-only group, with a p-value of 0.065. Co-author Alp Süngü put it plainly: “AI improved post-mistake accuracy! But it also slowed students down.” The paper is a working paper and has not been peer reviewed.
Slower and more accurate is not a failure. But it is not the revolution the brochures promised either.
4. UC Irvine wins $10m to build a national AI writing research centre

UC Irvine’s School of Education has been awarded a $10 million, five-year grant from the US Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences to create the WRITE AI Center, studying how generative AI should be used in postsecondary writing instruction. Tamara Tate described it as the sole award made through the IES competition.
Partners include MDRC, the American Council on Education, the California Community Colleges’ Digital Center for Innovation, Transformation and Equity, the Virginia Community College System and Houston City College. Year three brings a randomised controlled trial in first-year composition across six community colleges, and the team will develop PapyrusAI, an NSF-funded guided writing platform. A professional-learning course for educators starts on 29 September 2026.
Community colleges as the test bed is the right call — that is where the stakes are highest.
5. Anthropic opens Claude Academy with free AI courses

Anthropic has launched Claude Academy, a free learning platform of courses, tutorials and use cases covering Claude.ai, Claude Cowork, Claude Code, Claude Tag and the Claude Platform. No sign-in is required to learn, though account holders can track progress and earn completion badges for LinkedIn.
The centrepiece is a four-hour AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations course — 14 lessons plus a quiz — built around a 4D framework of Delegation, Description, Discernment and Diligence. A separate AI Capabilities and Limitations course runs to 13 lessons. Two ideas run through the material: “verify in proportion to the stakes”, and “ever-boarding” — the notion that with fast-moving tools, onboarding never really ends.
“Verify in proportion to the stakes” is the best six-word AI rule I have heard all year.
6. 70% of US teens use AI for schoolwork — only 27% have been taught what it is

Common Sense Media’s report Teens in the AI Era: Schoolwork and Skills That Matter, 2026 draws on an NORC survey of 1,017 US teenagers aged 13–17, fielded between 30 April and 14 May 2026 with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 points. Seventy percent use AI for schoolwork. Among those who do, 77% use it as support, but 63% go to it for an answer — 35% then improve it with what they already know, 31% rewrite it to sound like them, and 25% use it as-is.
The teaching has not kept pace. Only 27% say a teacher discussed what AI is or how it works; 44% covered when it is appropriate to use; just 26% were taught to check accuracy. ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok are used by 68%, writing assistants by 41%, research tools by 31%, AI tutors by 14%. Twenty-three percent report a school ban — and of the 44% who hit a block, 59% simply switched to a personal device. Asked which skills will matter most in future, teens put working with people first at 55%; knowing how to use AI came last, at 21%.
Teenagers are not confused about AI. They are unsupervised with it.
7. Google gives college students a free year of its AI plans

Eligible US college students can now claim Google AI Pro free for twelve months, while students across more than 140 markets outside the US can access Google AI Plus for a year. Alongside the giveaway, Google is expanding study features in Gemini and Search — quizzes, notebooks, interactive visuals and step-by-step learning tools.

70% of teens use AI for homework — only 27% were taught how
It is the number that lands with every audience at once: students recognise themselves in it, teachers recognise the gap, and parents want to know what to do about it. And this year there is a genuinely useful answer to give them, because the Tennessee trial in story three shows what actually changes outcomes — not access to AI, but the structure you wrap around it.
Seven in ten American teenagers now use AI to do their schoolwork. Only twenty-seven percent have ever had a teacher explain what AI actually is. We handed an entire generation the most powerful study tool ever built — and forgot to include the manual.
