Term has started, and the AI-in-education story has quietly flipped. For two years the argument was about access — who gets the tools, who pays, who is left out. This week access stopped being the problem. A major AI lab began handing entire American school districts a free year of its teacher product, while three separate pieces of research landed with the same uncomfortable finding: giving people an AI tutor and getting them to actually use it are two completely different projects.
1. Anthropic opens free Claude for Teachers to whole US districts

Anthropic has extended Claude for Teachers from individual educator sign-ups to centrally managed district deployments across US K-12 schools. The Enterprise option went live on 28 August, and qualifying schools or districts that enrol by 30 June 2027 get a full year free. Administrators verify the organisation, accept Anthropic’s K-12 terms and student data privacy agreement, then connect their email domain and single sign-on — after which they can add staff, set policies and watch adoption across schools. Teachers who already verified individual accounts get pulled into the managed environment through domain capture.
There is a catch worth naming. According to the reporting, the district offer does not raise usage limits above those on individual free accounts, so “enterprise” here means central control rather than extra capacity, with overage billing off by default. Anthropic says the data is FERPA-aligned and not used to train its models. Two new teaching skills built with Learning Commons also shipped for the new term — lesson preparation, and a check-for-understanding tool currently limited to mathematics — and an evaluation with Detroit Public Schools Community District is planned for the autumn.

2. Stanford: the AI tutoring evidence favours helping humans, not replacing them

A research review from Stanford’s National Student Support Accelerator and AI Hub for Education, published in August 2026 under the title AI Tutoring is Not a Monolith: What We Actually Know, argues that the phrase “AI tutor” is being used to describe wildly different things — from software quietly coaching a human tutor mid-session to a child alone with a chatbot — and that those models should not be judged as if they were interchangeable.
The numbers are blunt. In two randomised controlled trials across two districts, between 40% and 47% of students left to use an AI tutoring platform independently never opened it at all. Those who did averaged roughly two to five minutes a week. A separate study of 181,000 students using supplemental maths software found only 5% reached the recommended 30 minutes weekly, while 41% never logged in. By contrast, where AI coached a human tutor in real time, students were four percentage points more likely to master lesson topics — rising to nine points for students working with lower-rated tutors.

3. The Khanmigo problem: students barely touched the AI tutor

A two-year experiment run with a Tennessee school district randomly assigned lower-performing pupils across 18 middle schools to use Khan Academy during the school day, with Khanmigo — the AI chatbot built to answer questions without handing over answers — available alongside it. By year two, the Khan Academy group was making faster maths gains than a comparison group using other digital programmes plus small-group teacher instruction.
But the researchers say the gains did not appear to come from the AI. Students used Khanmigo on only about a third of the days they were working in Khan Academy, and many of those interactions were off-topic messages or attempts to talk the bot into giving up the answer. “Access was nearly universal but engagement was thin,” the researchers wrote, adding that human attention may be the key ingredient. Khan Academy has since redesigned its interface to weave the AI into the content rather than parking it alongside.

4. Slow maths: AI helped most when it made pupils redo their mistakes

In a randomised experiment with more than 6,000 Tennessee middle schoolers learning fractions, researchers tested four combinations: conventional computer-based instruction or the same software with an AI tutor, each with or without a “mastery” rule requiring three correct answers in a row after a mistake. Pupils used the software for a single 50-minute lesson, then sat a 15-minute retention test a week later.
AI on its own was not the winner. The combination that came out ahead was AI tutoring plus the repetition rule, scoring about three percentage points higher than conventional computerised instruction. Those pupils spent longer per question and were more likely to get the next one right after an error. The advantage showed up mainly on the easiest questions and did not transfer to harder problems. Lead author Philip Oreopoulos of the University of Toronto was careful: it “might be the first kind of evidence” hinting AI has positive value against no AI at all. The working paper had not been peer-reviewed at the time of reporting.

5. New York City’s school board rejects an Oracle contract, with AI worries in the mix

New York City’s Panel for Educational Policy voted down a $1.65 million Oracle deal that city officials had described as supporting “mission critical” HR and enrolment systems, warning that rejection could disrupt thousands of staff and families. Chalkbeat reports that opposition to Oracle combined with concerns about AI helped sink the vote.
It is a small contract by district standards, but a notable signal: school governance bodies are now willing to block back-office technology deals on AI-related grounds, not just classroom tools. The disruption warnings suggest the board weighed real operational risk and voted against anyway.

6. 88% of students now use AI — and most say nobody has told them the rules

The Digital Education Council’s 2026 survey draws on 45,398 responses — 27,284 students and 18,114 faculty across 35 countries. It found 88% of students now use AI in their learning and 77% of faculty use it in their teaching, up 16 percentage points on 2025. What has not kept pace is the scaffolding: 57% of students say their assessments come with inadequate AI guidance, only 29% believe their instructors are equipped to guide them, and just 31% of faculty feel meaningfully involved in shaping their institution’s AI policy.
The survey also picks up early dependence signals. 22% of students say they find it harder to work without AI, 20% say they depend on it to produce better work, and 19% say they retain less because they lean on it. Two thirds worry AI could make learning too shallow, rising to 81% in the US and Canada — the one region where faculty intent to use AI in teaching actually fell, from 76% to 67% in a year.
